Understand the performance of your supply chain and improve it in a targeted manner

How efficient is your supply chain compared with market standards and alternative operating models? As part of its benchmarking consultancy service, Metroplan analyses processes, costs, networks and organisation, identifies areas for improvement and devises specific measures for further development.

Supply chain benchmarking to assess one’s position in relation to the market

Rising costs, volatile markets and increasing demands for flexibility and service are adding to the complexity of the supply chain. At the same time, there is often a lack of an objective benchmark against which to realistically assess one’s own performance.

A structured benchmarking analysis provides transparency regarding performance levels, weaknesses and potential for development. Metroplan takes a holistic view of the supply chain, from end-to-end processes and network structures right through to organisation and management. This creates a robust foundation for building on strengths, addressing weaknesses and prioritising improvements in a targeted manner.

Metroplan provides an impartial second opinion. This gives shareholders and management an objective picture of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) of their own supply chain.

Benchmarking of the supply chain and logistics

Process Benchmarking and Operational Performance

We analyze processes from procurement and production through warehousing, transport and distribution. Lead times, inventory levels, service levels and process interfaces reveal inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.

Network and Logistics Structures

Locations, warehouse levels, transport routes and material flows are analyzed in terms of performance and cost-effectiveness. We identify structural weaknesses and opportunities for network optimization.

Organization and Management Model

We examine roles, responsibilities, decision-making processes and interfaces within the logistics and SCM organization, as well as collaboration with internal departments and external partners.

Cost Benchmarking and Performance Metrics

Transport and warehousing costs, costs per order or order line, productivity and service levels are compared with relevant market benchmarks.

Best Practices and Operating Models

We assess your current setup against relevant market standards and proven approaches. Where appropriate, we include traditional logistics service providers and 4PL models to identify alternative organizational and management options.

Identify best practices through benchmarking

Benchmarking highlights where performance gaps exist. Best practices help to identify appropriate steps for improvement. Metroplan assesses which tried-and-tested approaches can be adapted to your company’s specific requirements and objectives, rather than recommending one-size-fits-all standard solutions.

  • Process optimisation: Simplifying workflows, reducing interfaces and improving operational performance.
  • Network optimisation: Aligning sites, warehouse structures and transport routes with demand.
  • Organisational development: Clearly defining roles, responsibilities and management tasks.
  • Digitalisation and automation: Identifying approaches to achieve greater transparency, better planning and higher efficiency.
  • Make-or-buy and operating models: Objectively assess internal and external service provision as well as hybrid models.

Benchmarking as a basis for effective optimisation measures
Benchmarking does not automatically lead to optimisation measures. It highlights where a company’s own logistics operations are competitive, where improvements are needed, and where individual services can be provided more efficiently by external providers.

Our approach to benchmarking: from comparison to roadmap

1

Define the Target State and Comparison Framework

We work with you to define the key questions, areas of analysis and appropriate benchmarks.

2

Collect Data and Map Structures

We collect key metrics, process data, network information and organizational structures. Interviews and workshops complement the quantitative analysis.

3

Evaluate Performance Gaps

We identify weaknesses, performance limitations and optimization potential by comparing results with relevant benchmarks and best practices.

4

Develop the Target State and Recommendations

We consolidate the findings into an overall picture and translate them into concrete organizational, process-related and structural areas for action.

5

Prioritize Measures

An implementation-focused roadmap supports management decisions. Metroplan can also support implementation on request.

The added value you gain from benchmarking consultancy

  • Objective assessment: You will receive a well-founded evaluation of your supply chain’s performance.
  • Transparency regarding potential: Differences in performance, inefficiencies and structural challenges are brought to light.
  • Focus on best practice: Proven approaches and benchmark models are tailored to your specific situation.
  • Well-founded decisions: Benchmarking supports organisational, make-or-buy and service provider decisions.
  • Clear priorities: An action roadmap sets out specific next steps for further development

Using benchmarking and best practices for your supply chain

Benchmarking and best practices provide the basis for realistically assessing the performance of your own supply chain and developing it in a targeted manner. Metroplan supports you in identifying weaknesses, identifying suitable areas for improvement and developing a viable target vision. This results in a robust basis for decision-making and prioritised measures, regardless of whether further development is achieved through process optimisation, organisational changes or the adaptation of the operating model.

FAQ on benchmarking consultancy

What does Metroplan mean by ‘supply chain benchmarking?

The structured assessment of processes, costs, networks, organisation and management using appropriate benchmarks and, where appropriate, external operating models.

What is the difference between benchmarking and best practice?

Benchmarking assesses one’s own performance in comparison with others. Best practices are tried-and-tested approaches that serve as a guide for appropriate improvements.

How does Metroplan’s approach differ from benchmarking based on APQC (PCF) or SCOR (ASCM)?

APQC and SCOR provide standardised process models, key performance indicators and benchmark data. This enables a company to compare its own supply chain performance with that of other organisations. However, this requires a time-consuming process of mapping the company’s own processes and costs to the models. Furthermore, whilst such a comparison shows where a company stands, it does not indicate which measures are appropriate in a specific case.

Metroplan’s approach: We analyse your company’s processes, costs, network structures and organisation, largely on the basis of existing data. We assess potential for optimisation within the operational context, supplemented by insights gained from comparable projects. From this, we develop company-specific recommendations for action and a prioritised roadmap with concrete measures.

Which key performance indicators are considered in benchmarking?

Depending on the objective and the initial situation, factors such as lead times, stock levels, service levels, transport and storage costs, productivity and costs per order or order line item may be taken into account.

Does benchmarking automatically lead to outsourcing?

No. The results may point towards internal optimisation, insourcing, outsourcing or hybrid models. The decisive factors are the strategic, economic and operational requirements.

Does Metroplan provide support with the implementation?

On request, Metroplan can support the development and implementation of measures, for example in process optimisation, network development, organisational design or the evaluation of operating models.
