Efficient Modernization of Logistics Processes for a Leading Logistics Service Provider with a Wide Range of Article Volumes

Logistics Planning

Modernization of Fulfillment Logistics for Sporting Goods

The client is a globally active logistics service provider and is one of the leading German providers of transport and contract logistics. The customer operates the fulfillment logistics of a German company for sporting goods in the center of Germany on a warehouse floor space of over 100,000 m². The company's product range comprises around 35,000 items, including clothing, shoes and sports equipment. Due to the expansion of the long-standing cooperation, the service provider decided to transfer the logistics of his customer to a new concept. Metroplan accompanied the project through all phases: From conception to detailed planning, tendering and awarding, right through to implementation and final ramp-up.

The project focused on the modernization of existing logistics processing tailored to the specific requirements of the service provider's customer. To this end, current and future processes and requirements were identified and analyzed using the Metroplan tools. Based on the industry and customer-specific requirements, the conception and detailed planning resulted in the following key parameters:

  • 1-stage order processing for mail order and stationary retail
  • Separate picking according to article volumes in automatic tote warehouses (small-volume) and wide-aisle warehouses (large-volume)
  • Use of carton conveyor technology for incoming and outgoing goods and returns processing
  • Automated packaging
  • Integration of VAS modules for stationary retail
  • Integration of various manual functional areas (e.g. for the assembly of sports equipment)

The aim of the implementation was the integration and professional acceptance of all previously planned technical and IT systems as well as support until the final ramp-up. The focus here was on minimizing risk for our client (service provider) and ensuring the functionality of all systems, both individually and in combination, while meeting all performance and availability requirements. Finally, Metroplan accompanied the start-up and ramp-up phase in live operation until all systems were finally handed over to our client by the chosen manufacturers.
