Network Optimization and Planning of a New Central Warehouse to Expand Capacity

This globally operating customer based in Germany is well-known for its expertise in skincare and cosmetics. It develops, produces and markets a variety of well-known brands in the field of skin care products such as moisturizers and sunscreens. Headquartered in northern Germany, the company can look back on a long history and now sells its products in over 150 countries.

Due to a change in the production network and the significant increase in throughput and capacity requirements, the current logistics network is no longer sufficient to ensure long-term market supply for the DACH region. As a result, a comprehensive analysis of the warehouse and transport network was carried out by Metroplan.

Due to the size and complexity of the network, a modular approach was chosen for the design of the warehouse processes and intralogistics systems in conjunction with a network simulation. Based on these results and a supplier competition, preferred overall systems with state-of-the-art technology were developed for the central warehouse location.

The next step was the detailed planning of the preferred option on potential sites, taking into account special requirements such as hazardous substances and water-polluting goods. The core of the central warehouse is a high-bay warehouse with 125,000 pallet places and the connection of the different logistics areas by means of a highly dynamic monorail.
