Factory and General Planning for a Site Expansion to Support the Pre-Assembly of Helicopter Airframes

Factory Planning, General Planning

Integration of a New Production Building into an Existing Plant Structure

Airbus Helicopters is strategically developing the Donauwörth site to optimally address the increasing demand for helicopter airframes and the growing workforce. With dynamic growth and a current workforce of around 8,000 employees, the need for modern production and office space continues to rise. At the same time, airframe manufacturing is gaining increasing importance as a core capability of the site within the international production network.

At the heart of the project is the expansion of the site through the construction of a new production building of approximately 14,000 m², including additional office space.

As the responsible general and factory planner, Metroplan consolidates all relevant competencies into a holistic planning approach. Production and logistics requirements form the decisive basis for an architecturally and technically optimised building concept. The focus was on the design and planning of a future-oriented new facility, efficient use of space, forward-looking structures and a resource-efficient implementation.

Within the project, production and logistics processes were analysed in detail to develop target concepts for a future-ready factory structure. Key focus areas included the relocation and consolidation of production lines at a single site, the standardisation of existing assembly processes, the implementation of an adapted logistics concept, and space optimisation for administration and production.

Through this close integration of general and factory planning, a production building has been created for Airbus in which architecture and internal processes are optimally aligned.
